With spring and tax day near, this could be a great time for consumers to get their finances in order.
Evaluating all income, calculating expenses, identifying areas in which consumers can cut costs and starting an emergency fund are all key areas, according to credit.com.
America Saves, which is a campaign of the Consumer Federation of America, recommends using a financial app, budgeting website or spreadsheet to keep track of spending over the course of several months. With that knowledge, consumers could then better estimate their budgets.
Financial experts stress the importance of freeing up cash in order to pay down high-interest debt, and saving for future goals like retirement or college.
And consumers shouldn't let tax refunds get them off track. The influx of cash should be spent or placed where it is needed most.
