Welcome back to ask the borough president right here on News 12 Brooklyn. We're gonna get to your calls in just a second with BP Antonio Reynoso. But before we do it is the first show of 2024. I thought we take a quick look back at 2023 and you're a sports guy like I am. So as stats are the kind of thing, so I'm gonna give you some milestones here to beat in the year ahead. So let's look at last year. We win seven shows here, which was pretty good. Not too bad. 32 call in question. So you answered 32 questions here on the show, which is a pretty good average and your top topic the most questions you took were on housing. Does that surprise you? That does that? Does I thought it would be parking, car parking, parking is usually there or uh sanitation, but housing actually was your top question? So that's good to know. Uh Now we actually do have a housing question for you at some point tonight, but I wanna get right to the phones because people have been waiting to talk to you. Tonight. And let's go to bed Stuy tonight. At least Sean's joining us to talk tonight to you. Thanks for calling in tonight. Uh What's your question for borough president right now? Yeah, I wanna ask Antonio Reno a question. It's about the bus in here in Claremont Avenue. So what I noticed that is about that some of the buses are going slow and, and I wanna make sure why it's so slow. So I just wanna make sure about the whole bill here and elite as a case treatment center about the new, a new bathroom classroom thing. Is there a possible way to make it all better? All right. Thank you. Thank you for the question there. Very specific, very specific. What did you hear there? What do you got the, the second one? The second question, I hope um we stay on the line and we can get more information about where she's talking about if it's a facility in, in Brooklyn that we can be helpful with. Uh uh some resources would be more than happy to do that. The bussing one. I, I kind of talk about, you know, that that's the point, right. The only way we can move people away from vehicles is if we have reliable, fast and safe public transportation system and we don't have that. It's hard to encourage someone to leave their vehicle. When our buses, we could walk faster than our buses move. And it's why we're trying to do this but this bus rapid transit where we paint the, the, the, the streets are red and only buses should go on it. But on occasion, there's someone sitting there with loud music, double parked, um, on a bus stop making it so that the bus has to come around. Um, and they won't be able to move forward. It's very simple if we're able to have dedicated bus lanes where no vehicle can move ever. These buses can fly by and when a car is sitting there taking 20 minutes to get down a block and sees a bus flying by, that person is gonna think, hey, next time I won't bring my vehicle, I'll get in the public transportation system and watch all the other cars waiting to move while I'm flying by in a bus. That's the, that's what we're trying to get to, but it's very difficult because we've already seen some projects in the Bronx that were stopped. Uh And I have delayed the potential for all these folks that have more reliable and faster service. So it's an unfortunate thing, but uh I am fighting for it and trying to do the best I can. So I have more bus rapid and protected bus lanes. All right. Well, so thank you so much for the question. We'll make sure to pass your information along to the BPS office. I can follow up on that second question you had there. Uh as we wait again, reminder, call in right now, we still have time to take some more of your questions tonight. Uh We're sitting here at a, a crucial point for the city in regards to the migrant crisis and regards to that 60 day shelter limit. We're gonna unfortunately see some migrant families now facing eviction at a very poor time of year, especially weather wise. Uh What are your thoughts on kind of what's going on with that right now? Look, I I really uh sympathize with the mayor and how difficult this whole crisis has been. And uh and I wanna say that he's doing the best he can under the circumstances. I want to say that and I always have, but recently with the 60 day shelter limit, it's an example of how he is, what he is doing is making it impossible. If you're here, you've been here for 60 days and you get kicked out. You have a family, you have Children now you have to get out, get on the line and re re apply to enter into the shelter system is just not something that is, is helpful to them. Uh It's unnecessary by the city, the city, it's unnecessary, but it makes their life impossible. It makes their life difficult and it gives them frustration and maybe because of that they leave, they go somewhere else, not in the city. So all he's doing is kicking them out by another means and it just doesn't speak to who we are and it takes away from this idea or the perception that I had of how he was handling this crisis specifically, which I thought he was doing the best he could, uh, without the help of the federal government, you don't need the federal government to keep kids and mothers and families that travel 10,000 miles in our care for longer. And supposedly they're gonna be able to get right back in then, why kick them out in the first place? So, it's an unfortunate thing and I think the mayor is making a big mistake. Um, and it doesn't speak to who we are as New Yorkers. All right. Well, we'll follow that as we go through. We've got more callers wanna talk to you tonight. BP. And we wanna go right back to bed Stuy. Actually, uh, we got Mercedes joining us tonight to give you a question. Mercedes. Thanks for calling in. What's your question for the borough president? Hi, good evening. Thanks for this program. Uh, my question for the borough president is how can he help us as homeowners across from 433 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn to get bins for the tenants at 433 because they are throwing their garbage out on the sidewalk and the walkways because they don't have any bins to throw them in. So we have a lot of rats running around, but also the garbage gets blown over on our side. We get the ticket. Can I ask you? Is it a residential building? No, it's a nature building. It's nice. Ok. All right. Thank you for that Mercedes that I, I think, um, it's a, it's a tough one. A very difficult one because it is a residential building and as of now, the city of New York has not made it so that trash and residences have to be containerized. They've only done containerized waste for businesses. So, what you're seeing right now in these bins are all from businesses and we're gonna see a reduction in rats because of it because these restaurants and supermarkets are the ones that have all the trash that, that the rats can eat. But we're not there with residences. But I believe the mayor said that before the end of this year, we're going to start a pilot to containerize waste in residential areas as well. And I'm pretty sure Nitro would be one of the first places. But right now it's a problem we have because we never containerized waste in the past and we just started containerizing waste. All right. So hopefully some relief will be on the way there in the future. Exactly. Well, Mercedes, thank you for the question there. Welcome back everyone as we're here and ask the borough president with BP Antonio Reynoso. And it's that time of year community board applications are back. Right. Yes, they are. And we're very excited about them. Last year, we had, I wanna say 1100 but it could be 1400. It's a good number. It was the most we've had ever. And I wanna keep that up and I want folks to apply for the community board is where you're able to deal with very local issues. Your voices are heard to entry level, to civics in the city of New York and we wanna hear from you. So we're very excited for this year. Also, term limits are coming up in 2027 which means there's gonna be a lot of folks leaving the community board. So we need a bunch of new folks. So I'm hoping that uh Brooklyn does what it did last year and a ton of applications come in so we could fill these boards up and uh allow for people again to the basic c civics education. Absolutely. Make your voice heard just like the people of Bed Stuy are tonight because we're going back there for our next caller. All the calls from one neighborhood tonight. Uh, Tracy is joining us from Bed Stuy. She's got a question for you tonight and we're up against the Tracy so, real quick. What's your question? Ok, good evening. I'm calling again about the rats but I'm, it's not nature. It's probably own homes and buildings on the Kosciusko block by Marcy and it's, it's so bad that it's even coming into the buildings and eating through the walls and radiators. Oh, Tracy said, sorry to hear that. This is a big problem. What, what do we do here? Yeah. So, uh, Marcy and Koski Asco. So we're gonna, we're gonna look into that for sure to see if there's something that we can do to be helpful specifically in that street. We'll bring it to the Department of Sanitation. We just talked about containerization. It's still the answer. But I do wanna say we've been putting out the garbage later. Um, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we're picking it up in a timely fashion. There are, there are sightings or I've been told in Brooklyn where people don't see their trash get picked up till night time the next day. And if that happens, then what are we doing? The late night drop off if it's not gonna be picked up early morning? So we still got work to do. We're making progress. But on that one, specifically, we'll take down your information. Um And we'll make sure that wherever your address is that we send the Department of Health and the Department of Sanitation to look into. Absolutely. Uh real quick before we head out tonight. Maternal health has been a cornerstone for you. Uh, Governor Hole making it a part of her state of the state this week. And the major announcement you were there to hear from her just, uh, what can Brooklyn Knights look to in the year ahead on this? I, I think it's, uh, it's amazing. We are gonna be the first state in the country that will give paid time off for prenatal visits. So before you would need to take a day, it would have to be a vacation day or a sick day to go get your health coverage or your health care. And for folks that didn't have, uh, time off, they would just have to lose a day of work. Um, so many of them skipped going to the doctor on a monthly basis to get themselves checked up before the baby is born and that won't happen any. You're going to get paid, paid sick leave by the city of New York, by the State of New York. It's a great progress and it's little things that happen that help with outcomes. And it doesn't sound like a big deal, but this is huge and I'm so happy that Governor Hou is continuing this work. She's done every single year. She's done something for maternal health and it means that we're finally paying attention to this in a real way, seeing something on a statewide level. I know you've applied a lot of money and a lot of sources here in Brooklyn And that's something I'm sure a lot of the people here in the borough really do appreciate.
