A bittersweet barbecue was held last night in The Bronx to bid farewell to the Montefiore ambulance station.
The ambulances had served the Wakefield community for 58 years, but as the clock struck midnight, the Montefiore Medical Center closed the station for good, citing significant financial challenges.
FDNY ambulances will now take over, but the EMTs say the new first responders don't know the community as well as they do.
In December 2011, Montefiore released a statement saying that it would place the EMTs in new jobs with the hospital. However, during last night's barbecue, station employees said that promise has not been fulfilled for most of them.
