The dispute over how new FDNY recruits will be hired is continuing, after a judge approved the latest FDNY entrance exam last week. At issue is whether or not minority recruits will get preferential hiring for past discrimination and back-pay. Fairness hearings are being held today at Brooklyn Federal Court for firefighters to voice their opinions. An organization of black firefighters called the Vulcan Society says that minority applicants should have been hired years ago. They say overlooked applicants could have provided a valuable asset to the FDNY and should be compensated for being passed over. A judge has already ruled in favor of preferential hiring and back-pay totaling more than $128 million for minority firefighters, but that decision has been appealed.
