Several fatal traffic accidents along 65th Street in Bay Ridge have prompted families and lawmakers to call for immediate safety measures to be implemented along the road.
The most recent accident in the area occurred April 4 when a father and an 11-year-old were hit by an SUV while crossing 65th Street by 8th Avenue. The child was pronounced dead at the scene and the father remains in critical condition.
Families of accident victims gathered with Council Member Vincent Gentile (D-Brooklyn) at the intersection. Gentile recently passed the Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Act, which will take effect May 1. Families say they can?t wait until then and want immediate action.
The concerned citizens are lobbying the Department of Transportation to put speed limit signs along 65th Street and left turn signals at the 8th Avenue intersection.
