Bay Ridge woman fights to save Victorian building from demolition
A lifelong Bay Ridge resident is fighting to save a decades-old Victorian building that is slated to be demolished.
A Victorian home from the 1930s stands tall on Bay Ridge's busy Fourth Avenue. Its green turrets stretch high toward the sky, but possibly for not much longer.
Victoria Hofmo says the former Masonic Temple and most recently, nursery school, is just the latest historic building in the area to be torn down.
"I'm angry, I'm frustrated, I'm sad," Hofmo says.
City records show the building was sold in September 2017, with plans for demolition filed in June 2018.
"That is affecting the whole entire community, so you're affecting people's quality of life, their property values," Hofmo says.
Hofmo is worried the site will become a vacant lot like one next door, which has been empty for almost a decade.
"Having a block that's three-quarters empty, it's really disheartening," she says.
Other residents, however, say something new will bring in a good change that the community will appreciate.
The district manager of Community Board 10 says she sees both sides.
News 12 reached out multiple times to the new owner listed on city documents and other affiliated companies, but messages were not returned.
City records show a demolition inspection was passed this past January, but Hofmo says she hopes the building will be spared.
"I hope this can stay," Hofmo says. "I hope we can keep some of our beautiful architecture and use it for something worthwhile that benefits the community."
