A Bedford-Stuyvesant day care center is fighting to keep its door open after the city?s Administration for Children?s Services (ACS) cut funding.

A year ago, ASC said the Irving Place Child Development Center, which serves 50 pre-kindergarten kids, had low enrollment. However, those who run the center say the ACS commissioner promised to keep the day care open under two conditions. First, the Irving Center's Board promised to take over the lease for the building. The other condition was to raise enrollment. Irving Place?s chairperson says they agreed to take over the lease as of March. She says the center also qualified to lower their enrollment after they started accepting 2-year-olds.

City Councilwoman Leticia James says the city needs to concentrate on getting centers, such as Irving Place, up and running on their own, instead of cutting funding all at once. James also points out funding to day care centers shouldn?t be cut in light of a citywide budget surplus.
