Firefighters are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a woman from a burning home in Bed-Stuy.
The fire started at around 5 a.m. inside the basement apartment of a two-story house located at 846 Hancock St. There were multiple families inside the home at the time, including six young children, who all made it out safely.
However, 29-year-old Bernadette Weston became trapped on the second floor. Her twin sister Bernadine says firefighters used a ladder to bring her to safety. She was then taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The Red Cross is working with the families to find them a place to stay.
An investigation into what sparked the blaze is underway.
