Bed-Stuy family marks 40th birthday of relative killed by NYPD 20 years ago

Family and friends gathered in Bed-Stuy Saturday night to celebrate what would have been the 40th birthday of Carlos Lopez, a man who was fatally shot by the NYPD 20 years ago.
The crowd came together in the neighborhood of Dekalb Avenue to celebrate Lopez's life.
It was on May 1, 2003, when Lopez was killed at the age of 19. Police say Lopez had opened fire and killed another man near Gates Avenue.
His family believes he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now 20 years later, they continue to fight for justice. They have called on meetings with the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office to reopen the case and review new evidence that they say will clear his name.
Lopez's family said they will continue to mark his birthday every year to keep his legacy alive.
The Lopez family said they will meet with the DA's office on Nov. 8 with the hope to receive some form of justice.
