Residents in Bensonhurst have started a petition against a possible community center that they say will ruin the character of the neighborhood.
Neighbors say they heard that an application was submitted for demolition of 8121 21st Ave. in order to build a new building in its place. The filings with the Department of Buildings call for a house of worship, an ambulatory health care facility and educational classrooms, among other changes.
Residents say that type of project should not be in a residential neighborhood. They say it will take away parking and make the area congested.
The Department of Buildings says no permits for construction have been issued for the property. The area's community board says community facilities are permitted in most residential zoning designations under New York City regulations, and don't come before the community board.
