Residents in Crown Heights area say that they are on high alert after a suspect was caught on video fleeing with a stolen package on a bicycle, just moments after stealing an e-scooter nearby.
Benzion, a local resident, expressed frustration over the incident. "They have to catch him," Benzion said. "They have to put him in jail and take him off the streets - that's it!"
Police tell News 12 that the string of thefts began on Dec. 12, when the suspect entered the foyer of 1492 Union St. and made off with an e-scooter. Surveillance footage shows the suspect later riding a bike with another stolen package and e-scooter in hand.
Nearby shop owner Jelome said the incident has left him feeling uneasy about the safety of his business. "Of course, that makes me scared," Jelome said. "If he comes to steal, he's a very dangerous guy, you know."
Police sources say that the suspect is now wanted for grand larceny, but he remains at large. Neighbors are now staying vigilant and keeping a close watch on their surroundings. Melissa, another resident, urged caution for her fellow neighbors.
"I'm totally shocked right now," Melissa said "This is really crazy. We all have to be alert and be aware of our surroundings and try to look out for each other and our neighbors."
Police tell News 12 that the stolen e-scooter has since been recovered.
