An area long considered a dangerous spot for Brooklyn pedestrians is about to undergo some major changes come the summer.
The Department of Transportation will begin a four-month construction project at Grand Army Plaza beginning in July. The project includes adding raised pedestrian walkways, creating a new bike lane and reducing traffic coming out of Prospect Park to two lanes. There will also be 2,300 square feet set aside for flowers.
Changes to the plaza come on the heels of a 57-page report released in March by the Grand Army Plaza Coalition. The report addressed key issues about the design of the plaza and the organization's plan to turn the area into a great public square.
Although the improvements are welcomed, the group plans to take its report to local leaders to request funding for a professional study of the plaza.
