A bill is in the works to protect athletes from the dark side of sports betting.

13th District Assemblymember Charles Lavine is sponsoring legislation to halt betting from those who torment athletes either online or in person.

Lavine claims the billions wagered over March Madness benefits new tax revenue, but comes with a sinister side that affects athletes.

Lavine says instances have been reported of death threats, stalking, racism, homophobia, assaults and sexual abuse have been directed at amateur and professional athletes, coaches and officials.

If a person is caught doing unseemly conduct and convicted in court of it, the State Gaming Commission will place them on a prohibited bettors list that all betting platforms enforce.

A message criticizing a team would not trigger a ban, a criminal offense is necessary. Once convicted, a prohibition period that can range from one to 10 years goes into affect.

The bill is on a list of bills eligible for Assembly floor consideration.
