An 11-year-old Little League player preparing for a team photo in Starrett City was shot in the head Sunday by an apparent stray bullet.
A police spokesman says the boy, Davonte Kelly, is in stable condition at Brookdale Hospital. Kelly's mother, Andrea Walters, says it was only after her son was rushed to a hospital that they learned a bullet had lodged between the boy's skin and skull.
The family originally thought Kelly had been struck by a baseball.
Doctors say they extracted the bullet from Kelly's head and the 11-year-old is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days.
Investigators have no motive or suspects in the shooting.
