Brooklyn drivers could soon be going underground to take the Gowanus Expressway.
After reviewing almost 50 proposals, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has narrowed it down to three, including a subterranean route. The plan for the below ground expressway would be a three-and-a-half mile, seven-lane tunnel. It would cost approximately $13 billion.
Other options the DOT is considering are revamping the highway for $2 billion and adding a two-lane viaduct over the existing structure for $2.5 billion. Brooklyn residents will have a chance to express their concerns and learn more about the proposals at public forums.
