Victims and survivors of domestic violence were honored Saturday night at the Women Of Courage Awards.The event was organized by Jonah Village, a Brooklyn based non-profit organization dedicated to domestic violence prevention. They say the goal of the event is to break the cycle of violence by speaking out. Some of the victims of domestic abuse said acknowledgement, self-respect and self-esteem are powerful tools for women to protect themselves.Women of Courage say they also hope to spread their message to younger women and teenagers. They say by learning and being informed about domestic violence at an early age, girls are less likely to be abused later in life.
