Some Brooklyn women will no longer need a prescription to purchase the emergency contraceptive known as the morning-after pill.

The FDA approved the over-the-counter sale of the morning-after pill or Plan B to women who are 18 or older. The pill will be available at pharmacies and women will be required to show identification when purchasing the emergency contraceptive. Women who are under 18 will still need a doctor?s prescription.

Health officials say Plan B, when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, cuts the risk of an unplanned pregnancy. Supporters of the morning-after pill say making it available without prescriptions will cut the number of unplanned pregnancies in half. Opponents, though not happy about the FDA?s latest approval, are happy there is an age restriction. Many opponents worry women will use the pill as an alternative to birth control.
