Israeli forces have recovered the bodies of two hostages with dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship, including a woman from Orange County.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the remains of Judith Weinstein and her husband, Gad Haggai, were returned to Israel in a special operation by the army and domestic security agency.

Weinstein, a Goshen native, taught English to children with special needs in a small community near the Gaza border.

The military says the couple was killed during the Oct. 7 attack and taken into Gaza. Weinstein was able to call emergency services and report that both she and her husband had been shot.

Their deaths were officially announced in December.

Israel says Hamas-led militants are still holding 56 hostages, about a third of whom are believed to be alive.
