Nine Community Board 6 members got pink slips Tuesday in what some describe as revenge over their no vote on the Atlantic Yards project.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz sent letters to the members, many of them longtime Community Board 6 representatives, informing them he would not reappoint them. The nine members voted no to the $4 billion Atlantic Yards project in September 2006.
Some Atlantic Yards critics argue Markowitz ? who supports the development that will bring a Nets arena, skyscrapers and residential housing to downtown Brooklyn ? is taking his revenge. However, the borough president issued a statement saying he must address the need for fresh perspectives to be heard in Brooklyn through new members.Community Board 6 covers Carroll Gardens/South Brooklyn, Cobble Hill, Columbia Street District, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook.
