The victims of 9/11 and their families were honored in Brooklyn Friday ahead of the 17th anniversary memorial service in Manhattan.
Borough President Eric Adams honored 9/11 families at Borough Hall.
Adams was joined by NYPD and FDNY officials to honor those lost on 9/11 and those who continue to suffer from related illnesses as a result of the terror attack.
Among those honored were Brooklyn native Thomas Phelen, a ferry operator who helped to transport people escaping the towers. He joined the FDNY years after 9/11 and died on March 16, 2018, after being diagnosed with lung cancer believed to be contracted at ground zero.
NYPD Officer Ronald Kloepfer, who was assigned to the 73rd Precinct, was also honored. He died on 9/11 while attempting to rescue people from the World Trade Center just two days before his 40th birthday.
FDNY firefighter Shawn Powell was also honored. He served in the Army before being assigned to Engine Company 207 in Downtown Brooklyn. He answered the call to rescue people from the WTC on 9/11 where he was killed.
