A Brighton Beach man was arraigned Friday in the fatal hammer attack on three Sheepshead Bay restaurant workers last month.
Arthur Martunovich, 34, was video-conferenced in from Bellevue Hospital and pleaded not guilty from his hospital bed.
Martunovich was sitting in a room with his attorney, hands restrained behind his back, listening to the judge and prosecutors. He faces first-degree murder, second-degree murder and second-degree murder as a hate crime charges for the fatal attack inside the Seaport Buffet.
Prosecutors believe the motive in the attack was “racial animosity toward Asians.” Prosecutors say they are pushing for life in prison without parole given the strength of the case, including surveillance video of the incident.
Martunovich continues to receive mental health treatment. His attorney requested a mental health examination, saying the defendant has a psychiatric history.
That exam will help in determining whether he is fit for trial at this time. The results are expected to be discussed in court next month.
