Broadway’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ features actor playing 50 parts

Productions of "A Christmas Carol" are a holiday staple at theaters across the country. But this year the classic comes with a twist on Broadway.
Actor Jefferson Mays is portraying some 50 characters all by himself.
"This is a story that I've loved since childhood," says May.
The Charles Dickens tale was first published in 1843.
Mays recently departed his role as the mayor of River City in Broadway's "The Music Man" starring Hugh Jackman. He is no stranger to one person shows in which he's portrayed many characters. He received a Tony Award in 2004 for the play "I Am My Own Wife" in which he played nearly 40 characters.
Mays has performed this version of "A Christmas Carol" before. The most recent performance was a recorded production that was streamed by many regional theatres as a fundraising effort during the COVID-19 pandemic when venues were shuttered. The solo show was adapted for the stage by Susan Lyons. Lyons and Mays are married to each other.
"Dickens himself performed this as a one man show and we looked at this as a sort of self-haunting. I mean, it's the man who has this dark night of the soul on Christmas Eve and is transformed by it," says Mays.
"A Christmas Carol" is scheduled to run at the Nederlander Theatre through Jan. 1. Same day, in-person rush tickets are being offered for $30 each for day-of performances through Dec. 18, depending on availability. Find out more information about the show HERE.
