The first statewide gun buyback program is set to take place this weekend with drop off locations in Bronx and Brooklyn.
Attorney General Letitia James is pushing to get guns off the streets in hopes of saving lives.
"Gun violence is a major issue in the state of New York. Having guns in one's home has led to a significant amount of tragedies," says James. "We've seen some mass shootings over these last few years and it's really critically important that we do all that we can do to remove guns from homes."
James is teaming up with the NYPD to invite people to turn in guns, no questions asked, in exchange for up to $500 in the form of a gift certificate.
"Since I have served as the attorney general, we have removed over 4,000 guns off of the state of New York and I want to increase that number," says James.
