A youth basketball coach has been accused of raping a Bronx teen in 2024, and families say the charter school connected to the case is offering few answers.
Police say 34-year-old Jayvone Johnson raped a 14-year-old athlete of the Ichan Charter School II in Morris Park. Prosecutors say he was her coach at the time.
A criminal complaint alleges Johnson brought the teen to a Bronx motel room in late December 2024, where prosecutors say he raped her twice.
Johnson began coaching the team a little more than year earlier, and parents say they feel blindsided and betrayed— The Bronx District Attorney's Office says the accused had no prior criminal history.
Families say they’re learning details only now—after receiving an email from the school today—more than a year after the alleged assault.
"I feel like that's what schools always do." Gaby Mendoza, whose brother is a seventh grader at the school. " They never say anything and I feel like they don't really act on it, either. Like if a teacher is doing that, I feel like they should be saying more."
The charter school would not answer questions about when Johnson was fired—or how long administrators may have known about the allegations—only confirming to News 12 that he is "no longer employed by the school."
The District Attorney's Office says Johnson turned himself in December and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was released under supervision and is due back in court Feb. 11.
Police are asking anyone who may have additional information—or who may be a potential victim—to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline.
