A Bronx mother was happily reunited with her son after he allegedly walked off of school property earlier this week.  

Farjahan Akter says when she arrived to pick up her son, panic began to set in.  

“I walked up to the teacher and said ‘Where is Zyan?’… she said, ‘you picked him up already’,” said Akter.  

After calling his name in the streets, contacting the NYPD, and searching the school’s classrooms, Akter feared the worst for her 4-year-old son. 

"He could get hit by a car. He could have gotten kidnapped,” said Akter. “I can’t even imagine what could have happened.” 

Akter usually picks her son Zyan up from the school yard, and signs forms for him to be dismissed. But she says on Tuesday, two blocks away from the school, she spotted the three good Samaritans who rescued her son from the road.  

Aside from a few minor bruises, Akter says Zyan was physically unharmed, but she says that he is now afraid even when she just mentions the word ‘school’. 

Akter is worried that the school’s security system is not strong enough to prevent incidents like this taking place again.  

According to the Department of Education, the Santa Maria School is a contracted program under the Archdiocese of New York City.  

The Archdiocese released the following statement on Wednesday evening: 

"As a result of the incident that occurred at dismissal yesterday, a Department of Health inspection took place today. We are awaiting the order from the DOH as to next steps, including a potential temporary closing."
