A Bronx student received a $40,000 scholarship as she gets ready for college.

Habiba Tawfiq, a student at Success Academy Charter School, is one of 16 scholars to receive the money though the S.A. Ruth and Norman Rales Scholars Program.

Tawfiq is one of the school's most decorated track and field athletes and a star in the classroom.

Last year, she enrolled in a product design course at Stanford University and made a scratch-removal product plan for stainless steel surfaces.

Tawfiq says she fell in love with STEM and plans to go to Northeastern University to inspire other young women.

"I definitely majored in mechanical engineering because I feel like women and Muslims are not accurately shown in the field. There's not enough representation of people that look like me, so I'm bound to change that," she says.

In total, seven students from the Bronx and one from Brooklyn are getting $40,000 scholarships. They are also getting mentors and career help through the Ron Brown Scholars Program.
