While getting her master's in public health at New York University, a Bronx native saw the disparities in care for Black women and decided to do something about it.
Ashlee Wisdom created Health in Her H.U.E. so that women of color aren't left behind when it comes to health.
"I'm reading this journal article and seeing that Black women had some of the worst health outcomes, and I started crying," says Wisdom.
That's when Wisdom knew she needed to start Health in Her H.U.E., a digital platform that connects Black women and women of color to health care that centers them. "H.U.E." is an acronym that stands for Heard and Understood Experiences.
"That is what I think is missing when it comes to Black women's health. People aren't willing to hear us out, and they are not willing to hear our lived experiences and how that impacts our health and that is what Health in Her H.U.E. is trying to deliver for Black women," Wisdom explains.
Through what Wisdom calls the company's three C's - connection, content and community - those on the platform can find a curated directory of 1,300 culturally responsive health care providers across 60 specialties.
There is also information and articles about a host of health issues in the community and a forum to talk with other women battling something similar.
As wisdom continues to build the brand, she just announced that she and her team have raised more than $4 million in venture capital to take the company to the next level. She says the road hasn't been easy, but the support has gotten her through the tough times.
