The family of a Bronx woman with dementia says her apartment bathroom has been falling apart for over a year, with no help from NYCHA.
Maria Paduani, 73, says she hasn’t been able to fully use her own bathroom in over a year. She says inside the bathroom you can see plaster from the ceiling falling down and the walls peeling.
Paduani asthma in addition to her dementia.
Her family says the bathroom is a health hazard. They say sometimes pieces of the ceiling will fall down on her when she uses the bathroom.
Paduani’s family also tells News 12 that NYCHA has repeatedly rescheduled appointments to make repairs.
At the start of this month, they say the conditions of the apartment got so bad that Paduani had to move into a nursing home as she waits for the bathroom to be fixed, but that this move was only supposed to be temporary.
With Paduani’s bathroom still falling apart, her living arrangements remain in limbo.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA, below is a statement:
“NYCHA staff have completed a mold inspection
and plumbers are addressing a leak. Plastering has been scheduled beginning
tomorrow and we have also scheduled carpenters, exterminators and painters for
next week, after plastering is completed. We ask that all residents continue to
use the MyNychaApp or call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 to
create a work order ticket for any maintenance needs.”
