The Bronx Zoo is welcoming a new addition to the family after a purebred bison calf was born.
The calf is the first purebred bison born through scientific techniques. Zookeepers say purebred bison are rare due to interbreeding with cattle.
"Our hope is to continue this program with the goal of establishing a breeding herd of genetically pure bison here at the zoo, and offspring from that herd would then be used to establish restoration herds out west," said Patrick Thomas.
The calf is currently being held in private captivity with its mother and remains away from the public's view.
