The Ponce Massacre took place on Palm Sunday in 1937 when a peaceful march to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico and to protest the United States imprisonment of their party’s leader turned violent.
A total of 19 civilians were killed along with two police officers, and a few hundred people were injured.
Organizers of the event at the El Maestro Cultural Center said it's important to never forget what happened that day and how it impacted Puerto Rico and those who call the island home.
The event featured guest speakers, a film, music and the commitment to honor those lost.
