Freezing rain and icy streets created a treacherous commute across Brooklyn as the city saw its first major winter storm of 2007 Wednesday.
The wet snow started Tuesday night and turned to hail. Drivers also had to deal with cleaning off their cars and long delays. Sanitation workers are focusing on salting highways and bus routes before the evening rush hour. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says flyers can expect delays between 15 to 60 minutes at major airports. Officials urge people to take it slow and give themselves extra time if they must leave their homes. Meanwhile, Con Edison warns customers to stay away from downed power lines and report them at 1-800-75-CONED.
The storm didn't give students the snow day they hoped for. Public schools opened and buses were operating on or close to schedule.
