The Brooklyn district attorney announced an indictment on murder as a hate crime charges against a teenager accused in a Midwood murder.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez says the teen could get a minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of 25 years to life in prison for O'Shae Sibbley's death.
The killing took place on July 29 when police say Sibley and his friends stopped at a gas station. Sibley was dancing outside of the car when police say a group started yelling anti-gay and anti-Black slurs.
The dispute turned violent, resulting in a fatal stabbing.
Prosecutors say Sibley was about to turn 29.
"It's clear to me under the circumstances of this case that the insubstantial part of this attack was caused because people were offended by Mr. Sibley and his friends dancing and celebrating," Gonzalez says. "And it doesn't matter what the religion is of the perpetrator, the bias we allege was in his heart and statements."
The district attorney says the 17-year-old's name is not being released yet.
His arraignment is set to take place on Friday.
