Brooklyn DA: Man sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatal shooting in Bed-Stuy

The defendant was seen on surveillance cameras leaving and approaching the scene, as well as taking the victim's hat and leaving him on the sidewalk near a pile of garbage bags.

A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting a man in Bed-Stuy in 2019.
According to court documents, evidence shows that Darrien Weekes, 26, encountered Malik Russell, 29, outside of 519 Chauncey St. in June 2019. Weekes, Russell and a third man who has been named a co-defendant in the case, were having a conversation when Weekes suddenly took a gun out and shot Russell three times.
Weekes was seen on surveillance cameras leaving and approaching the scene, as well as taking the victim's hat and leaving him on the sidewalk near a pile of garbage bags. He pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on April 17 of this year.
The co-defendant, Oliver Kinard, 27, pleaded guilty to third-degree hindering prosecution and was sentenced to a conditional discharge.
