Brooklyn schoolchildren got a lesson in how to avoid brain injuries at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in East Flatbush. Doctors say brain injuries can be caused by accidents that can happen to anyone. Common side effects can include memory loss, problems concentrating, and difficulty in speaking. The staff at the hospital invited the third-graders to come and learn about brain injuries. The students watched a movie that profiled brain injury victims. They learned that motor vehicle accidents, falls, and sports injuries can all cause damage to the brain. Children say a puppet show about the importance of wearing bike helmets helped them to remember the message to pay attention and be careful. Organizers say they hope the program will have a lasting effect on the kids. At the end of the program all the children were given bike helmets.
