Brooklyn man to file suit against Boy Scouts for alleged sexual abuse
The Boys Scouts of America are facing yet another lawsuit -- this time from a Brooklyn resident.
Winfred Burrus, 57, emotionally brought forth serious allegations at the hands of his former scoutmaster Wednesday. Burrus alleges he was sexually abused by his group leader Freddie Modica in 1972 by being lured to his house and was involved in inappropriate sexual contact.
"He led us into his bed where he performed oral sex and fellatio for his own sexual gratification," says Burrus.
The lawsuit will state that the organization knew, or should have known, what was happening, and should be held accountable for damages to the victim.
Burrus says he has struggled dealing with the situation over the past 40 years, but was finally ready to come forward.
"I've talked about it briefly and mentioned it ... I have to speak out against this so others can be safe and not have it happen to them."
The lawsuit will officially be filed as soon as the New York State statute permits, which will be on August 14.
News 12 reached out to the BSA, who responded in part, "We care deeply about all victims of abuse and sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time in scouting ... the BSA has taken significant steps over many years to ensure that we respond aggressively to reports of abuse. It is BSA policy that all incidents of suspected abuse are reported to law enforcement."
