The 154th Brooklyn Memorial Day parade is known for being the longest running big-city parade in the country.
Starting in Brooklyn shortly after the Civil War, the parade aims to mourn and pay tribute to fallen soldiers.
The parade usually draws large crowds to the streets of Bay Ridge, but this year due to the pandemic, the tradition is continuing as a motorcade driving through the neighborhood.
The motorcade travelled past the corner of 3rd Avenue and 75th Street before stopping at the VA hospital. It then moved on to a memorial service by Fort Hamilton at John Paul Jones Park.
"Part of coming out...for me is part of my healing. I'm able to express myself on behalf of those who can't be with us," says veteran Danny Friedman.
Last year, the motorcade looked very different because of COVID-19, and only one person was allowed at the memorial ceremony. Over the weekend, members of the United Military Veterans of Kings County set up a tent and a stage in preparation for the event.
"This year we have a tent set up over there, we invited a bunch of people and we're going to have a full-blown ceremony," says Raymond Aalbue, Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade committee chairman.
