Housing advocates and elected officials joined with Brooklyn public housing advocates to protest proposed rent hikes. The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) says the hikes are needed to close its operating deficit. Brooklyn residents and advocates say the housing authority has not answered enough questions about its new financial plan. NYCHA maintains that residents living in public housing have had a chance to speak out at public hearings in the boroughs. A final vote on the issue is scheduled for June 8.
