Several Brooklyn residents said Monday that Senator-designate Kirsten Gillibrand is the wrong woman to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat and represent New Yorkers like them.
Neighbors and community advocates met to discuss Gillibrand?s stance on firearms, which they say is one of the more important issues to the Brooklyn community. Debra Griffin-Daza, who has lost loved ones to gun violence, says Gillibrand is placing hunters? rights before safety.
?When are you going to understand the pain that we go through in our community, here in Brooklyn?" Griffin-Daza asks.
Community advocate Tony Herbert contacted Gillibrand?s office to organize a meeting between the senator-designate and Brooklyn residents. Gillibrand launched a ?Listening Tour? this past weekend and met with constituents in Harlem to hear their opinions and answer their questions. Gillibrand says she will work to preserve hunters? rights while combating gun violence.
?On all these issues that matter to this community, on keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, I will commit to you that I will work on those issues diligently to make sure you can keep your children safe,? Gillibrand said Saturday in Harlem.
A spokesperson for Gillibrand says a meeting in Brooklyn is in the works.
