The mayor unveiled a plan to rename streets in Brooklyn to honor those who lost their lives during tragic events.
Mayor Bill de Blasio signed legislation Thursday to co-name 42 streets and thoroughfares across the city. One road slated to be renamed will honor Tanaya Copeland, the teen stabbed to death in East New York. The plan is to add Copeland's name to the north side of Stanley and Sheridan avenues.
Rochelle Copeland says it's comforting to know that Tanaya will never be forgotten. Copeland says her daughter's killer has never been caught, but she tries to remain strong.
A stretch of Montgomery Street will be named for Dr. Derrick Griffith, who was killed in the Amtrak derailment. Griffith worked as a dean at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn.
In addition, Clinton Avenue will also be known as Carey Gabay, in honor of the aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo who was killed during the West Indian American Day Carnival.
