Volunteers for the Red Cross had a busy 2018, responding to a total of 600 emergencies in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn had the most emergencies in the city for the year.
Volunteers responded to a tragic fire on Eastern Parkway in August that left 1 person dead and displaced 15 families. The Red Cross was there to help.
The volunteers were in action once again for a fire on Coney Island Avenue that left four families without homes. Red Cross volunteers helped the families rebuild their lives.
"To start to set them on that path of recovery to tell them this might be the worst day of your life, but it does get better," says Garrison Harward, of the Red Cross.
Brooklyn emergency crews installed 6,400 smoke alarms and urge people to have an escape plan in case of an emergency.
