A Bronx charter school has received recognition for its outstanding achievements by the U.S. Department of Education. The Bronx Charter School for Excellence on Benedict Avenue is one of 269 schools in the U.S. and just five schools in the city to be selected as a Blue Ribbon school. It's the first time that a New York City charter school has been awarded the prestigious status. In order to be nominated, schools must have top scores on state tests and meet other criteria. Once nominated, schools apply for Blue Ribbon status through essays on teaching methods and leadership. While there's no financial reward, students at the charter school say it's a high honor that represents all of their hard work.
