Dozens of Cambodians came together Sunday to remember the lives lost to genocide.

The Cambodian Buddhist Temple was filled with music and prayer to honor more than a million people who were killed during the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s.

The building serves as a cultural center for the roughly 150 Cambodian families who live in Brooklyn.

Chai Srun Von visited traveled all the way from Washington D.C. for the event.

"I think it's important because this is the souls of our ancestors," Von says. "This is my culture, these are my roots."

Musicians who performed at the ceremony played a special tribute called "Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia." over the weekend at the Brooklyn Academy of Music

Organizers tell News 12 that they will continue to celebrate Cambodian culture throughout the year and that the Bangsokol show will be performed in Boston later this week.
