Can traffic banners help reduce crashes? The Department of Transportation hopes so

On 1,000 of its street light poles across the five boroughs, there are now banners hanging with traffic safety messages.

The Department of Transportation started a new initiative to help keep you safe but the campaign-- getting some mixed reviews.
"New York has the most terrible drivers," says Alayjia Crawley.
She believes the Department of Transportation's new initiative will not solve it.
On 1,000 of its street light poles across the five boroughs, there are now banners hanging with traffic safety messages.
Shanduke McPhatter says he is also skeptical.
"There's no penalties that come with that," he explains. "It's just awareness."
Over on Atlantic Avenue, a handful of these banners are now up. Residents say they do not think a banner will change traffic safety.
The Department of Transportation says its data backs up that these small advertisements do work, based off of a 2022 study they conducted.
