Some residents in one Brooklyn neighborhood discovered their car windows smashed over the weekend, despite an arrest police made in August of the alleged perpetrator.
The suspect, 43-year-old Darren Stone, was taken into custody in connection with a string of car break-ins that have been plauging DUMBO for several months. But resident Stephen Lugo says a week after the arrest, the incidents picked up again.
?There's about seven or eight broken windows,? says Lugo. ?Along here you can see the remnants; up the street there's more - a total of 15, I'm told.?
Later in the week, neighbors say more windows were shattered.
?It seems to me that they may not have caught him,? Lugo says.
Police are now trying to determine whether there is a copy cat criminal operating in the neighborhood, and whether there is more than one person responsible for the break-ins.
In the meantime, drivers in DUMBO demand additional police presence to ensure the safety of their vehicles. Some, however, are taking matters into their own hands and taking steps to minimize the damage in case of a break-in. That entails removing everything from the vehicles at night and leaving them unlocked with the windows down.
According to the director of a local community board, many break-ins go unreported. He urges residents to notify authorities of every incident of vandalism because the more complaints they receive, the greater the chance of increasing police presence in the area.
