Faculty members at Rachel Carlson High School and the parents' association president met with the president of the teachers' union Friday about the impact the principal's dismissal has had.
The Department of Education reassigned Joanne Pierre last week, pending an investigation into whether she used education funds for personal gain. Representatives from the Department of Education confirmed that Pierre has admitted to some of the charges. The removal has sparked outrage among parents, students and teachers. At the meeting, Anthony Flemming, president of the parents' association, strategized with the teachers' union president about reinstating Pierre. Flemming says since Pierre's departure, attendance has plummeted and less than a handful of students showed up for a weekend Regents workshop.
Meantime, students have put away their uniforms in exchange for wearing a different color each day. The students along with parents and teachers held a rally in front of the Tweed Courthouse Friday to demand the Department of Education address the matter.
