A ceiling collapse at a Fordham apartment building nearly struck a Bronx mother who was home when it happened.
Shaniqua Ihejirika was in her bedroom just a few days ago when water began dripping all over her apartment. She called the FDNY, which turned off her water and power. An hour later, Ihejirika says the entire ceiling filled with water, almost collapsing on top of her.
“They said that basically they did what they could do… I can’t sleep in my room, I have to find a place for me and my daughter to really stay,” said Ihejirika.
She says she’s not surprised that this happened, saying that situations like this with flooding and structural issues have been going on in her apartment building for years.
Dougert Management Corp. manages the building and the website of the Housing Preservation and Development agency says that there are several complaints about leaking ceilings and bathrooms in different units dating back to 2021.
Management says the repairs to Ihejirika’s apartment will be made on Friday.
