The NYC Department of Transportation has started work on the southern section of McGuinness Boulevard after years of debate.
“ McGuinness Boulevard is a one mile, four-lane road that’s been injuring and killing the neighbors of Greenpoint. This is going to make tremendous difference in our neighborhood," said Bronwyn Breitmer, a member of the advocacy group, Keep McGuinness Safe.
By the end of the year, the four-lane highway from Meeker Avenue to Calyer Street will transform into a two-lane highway keeping a parking lane and adding a protective bike lane.
“This is going to make tremendous difference in our neighborhood," said Breitmer.
The pedestrian island by Meeker Street will also be expanded, and two new medians will be added at the intersection of Bayard Street and McGuinness Boulevard.
