A new resolution adopted Tuesday by the City Council is calling on the Department of Education to create a Jewish Heritage Day in city public schools.
The legislation was introduced by Council Member Shaun Abreu in an effort to combat antisemitism and celebrate diversity. The unanimous vote passed through the council's Committee on Education, chaired by Council Member Rita Joseph, who says it could be a valuable tool for the communities.
The Department of Education still has to agree to move forward with the creation of a Jewish Heritage Day, as well as how to implement it within city schools.
