After years of community campaigning, Sunset Park’s 50th Street has been designated as a historic district.
It's been a nearly 40-year fight to preserve the brownstones along the street. That fight ended Tuesday with a simple vote in the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The homes were constructed between 1897 and 1903.
Two groups have been advocating for the landmark status – The Sunset Park Landmarks Committee and the Sunset Park Restoration Committee.
The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission also designated three other parts of the neighborhood historic district status – Sunset Park North, Central Sunset Park and Sunset Park South.
