After a seven-month search, the Mamdani administration has named the next president of the Economic Development Corporation.
Anthony ‘Tony’ Shorris will lead the corporation tasked with managing the city's assets and developing long-term economy strategy in New York City.
Shorris is a city government veteran, having previously served as a First Deputy Mayor in the De Blasio Administration and senior budget official under Mayor Koch.
His accolades include the $4 billion ten-year housing plan that rehabilitated nearly 200,000 affordable housing units in neighborhoods that had been impacted by disinvestment and arson.
Shorris' background also includes serving as the Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Deputy Chancellor for Operations at the DOE.
"He holds a clear vision for how to leverage the unique position of the Economic Development Corporation to work with businesses that want to build and thrive in New York City. He speaks often of how we can pair economic growth with economic mobility. And his words there are no fixed allies or adversaries in this world, only potential partners. That mindset is exactly what we need from our EDC president as we usher in a new era in New York City," said Mamdani.
The EDC oversees and manages the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center and the Brooklyn Army Terminal. It also operates the NYC Ferry system, and Manhattan and Brooklyn cruise terminals among other capital projects.
The Five Borough Jobs Campaign commended the appointment.
"As the Administration works to make New York more affordable, local job creators across all five boroughs must remain at the center of that effort. The Five Borough Jobs Campaign stands ready to partner with Shorris and the administration to develop and execute an economic development vision that expands job opportunities for New Yorkers" the Five Borough Jobs Campaign wrote in a statement.
Lina Khan will serve as the chair of the EDC board.
